Download DocuShare File UpHelper Software

UpHelper Installation

1. Select and save the installation program for your operating system:

2. Run the installation program.

3. Update your DocuShare user account.

The DocuShare File UpHelper is a Windows application that enables uploading files to the DocuShare repository. This helper application provides support for users of browsers that do not support the file upload standard, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0.

UpHelper also provides the ability to upload multiple documents at one time. Although Netscape browsers and Microsoft I.E. 4.0 support the file upload standard, they only allow the upload of one file at a time. If you want to upload multiple files during a session, you may also want to install the UpHelper application. The maximum number of files you may upload at a time using this helper application is 100.

Instructions for obtaining and installing the File UpHelper application, are available below or in Chapter 1, "Getting Started" in the DocuShare User's Guide.

Instructions for use of the File UpHelper application are available in Chapter 5, "DocuShare Files" in the DocuShare User's Guide.

Obtaining and Installing the UpHelper Application

Before you can use the UpHelper application, you must install and configure it on your computer. There are 3 steps required to install the UpHelper application for successful use with DocuShare. They are:

  1. Download and Install the UpHelper application
  2. Browser Configuration for the UpHelper application
  3. Editing your DocuShare User Account

  1. Download and Install the UpHelper application

The helper is distributed as a self-extracting, executable installation program.

    1. Download the appropriate file for your operating system from the list on the left. Available choices are: Windows 95/NT 4.0, Windows NT 3.5 or Windows 3.11. Save this file to a temporary location on your local computer.
    2. Locate the installation file using your file management tool. Select this file and double click on the filename to start the installation program.
    3. The installation program will ask where you want to install the UpHelper application. The default location (C:\DSUpHelper\) is the preferred location for install. The program will create this directory if it does not exist. The DocuShare UpHelper installation only adds about 200K of files to your machine.
    4. When the installation program completes, you can delete the installation program if you wish.

For all versions, please also consult the Readme text file associated with the UpHelper installation for any additional instructions, notes or updates.

  2. Browser Configuration for the UpHelper application

Your browser must also be configured to recognize and use the UpHelper application.

The UpHelper installation program will detect which browser you are using (Netscape or Internet Explorer) and will configure your browser to use UpHelper. If you have both Netscape and Internet Explorer installed on your machine, the installation program can configure both browsers during this process. In case of installation problems, or if you are using a browser not supported by the UpHelper installer, please refer to the following directions for manually configuring the UpHelper application to work with the Netscape browser as an example of what to do.

Required settings for configuring UpHelper to work with Netscape Navigator 3.0:

    1. Go to Options | General Preferences | Helpers.
    2. Click Create New Type and fill in the two fields:
      • Mime Type: application
      • Mime SubType: x-send-docushare-files
Select OK to exit the dialog box.
    3. Fill in File Extensions: dfu
    4. In the Action area, select Launch the Application.
    5. Click on the Browse... button; locate and select the UpHelper application on your computer, for example - C:\DSUpHelper\Uphelper.exe
    6. Select OK to exit the Options dialog window.

  3. Editing your DocuShare User Account

The final step required is to edit your User Account properties to tell the DocuShare application that you will be using the File UpHelper application.

To edit your User Account, click on the link to your username that appears at the top of (most) every page. Select Edit Properties. You must edit the field for Use Helper for Upload.

    Suggested settings for this property:

    • Selecting Always means that you will always use the UpHelper application, no matter which browser you use. This is the suggested setting for constant use of the UpHelper application, no matter which browser is used. You will need this setting if you want to use UpHelper with an upload-capable browser.
    • When Necessary is designed for users who may have both browsers installed on their computers. With this setting, if you are using the Internet Explorer browser, the UpHelper application will be used to upload files. However, if you are using the Netscape browser, the UpHelper application will not be used to upload files.
    • Never means that the UpHelper application is never used to upload files. DocuShare assumes that this setting means that you do not have UpHelper installed on your computer.
